is a lifelong learner. A reformed control freak, Valerie has experienced her own
highs, lows and curveballs in life, turning to education, experience, and dark humor as her life line.
While many believe that her various degrees prove her qualified to educate and
empower others, Valerie finds that her greatest qualifications are those you
can’t get in a school system – only in life.
Building better lives for people has been at the root of Valerie’s career from
the start. With Family Dynamics, Valerie is expanding her network of support
to those beyond solely therapeutic needs. Through life coaching, she aims to
prevent disasters before they occur, guide people towards a more fulfilling life,
and help clients rewrite their own family dynamic narrative.

Valerie has been working with children and families since 1976 as a student nurse in south Texas, while earning a B.S. in Nursing from University of Texas. She received her M.A. in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from Santa Clara University and began a private psychotherapy practice in 1983.
She subsequently returned to law school at SCU and completed a J.D. in 1988. While at SCU, Ms. Houghton completed her certificate in Public Interest Law, concentrating on disability civil rights and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Ms. Houghton maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Campbell, CA, working with families, couples and individuals, in addition to a limited forensic practice focused on evaluations, consultations and family mediation.
"Comparing her work to others in the same field, one is of course impressed with her resume, but more importantly, it was the results she achieved for our clients. Ms. Houghton has an instinct which cannot be taught. She is one of the elites in her field."
